Father Franks Spiritual Reflection for Sunday, March 22nd:

“Not as man sees does God see.”

What is the meaning of blindness?  What does the word blind mean?   To be blind means to be deprived of sight; to be deceived; to become dark; to be enveloped in darkness; to lack mental perception; to make cloudy; and it can refer to anything that obstructs sight.  All the readings today revolve around a theme of sight and of blindness:  The LORD says to Samuel:  “Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature”, i.e., one can be fooled by the superficiality of appearance.  St. Paul in the second reading juxtaposes darkness with light (lies—truth/sin—virtue).  In light we can see; in darkness we are blind.

The Gospel of the man born blind addresses the human condition of physical and spiritual blindness. The disciples ask:  “Who sinned, this man or his parents?”  I know of just one inherited sin: original.  However, this man is physically blind, thus the question posed by the disciples was regarding the culpability for his blindness. Was it something his parents had done that caused his blindness, or was it the man’s sin that caused him to be blind?  Good question. What’s the answer?

Blindness is an affliction mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. The Law of Moses actually contains admonitions regarding a blind person, that is, things one should and should not do to the blind, e.g., it was explicitly forbidden to place obstacles in their path [cf. Lev 19:14] or to lead them astray [cf. Dt 27:18]. “Blindness is also used in a metaphorical sense to indicate an interior disposition of spiritual hard heartedness or a willed lack of sensitivity to the works and wishes of God.” [cf. Isa 42:18; 43:8; 56:10; Rom 2:19; 2 Cor 4:4; 2 Pet 1:19; NAB 67]

Jesus made a paste out of clay and spittle and put it over the eyes of the man born blind. The man born blind was then instructed by Jesus to “go and wash in the Pool of Siloam” a name that means “sent”; and his sight was restored. The sacrament of penance reminds us that God desires no soul be lost, rather, He always waits for our response to His invitation to “go and wash.” The Pharisees remain obstinate that the Son of Man had no power to forgive sins and they rebuke Our Lord: “We are not blind, surely?” And the Jesus responds: “Blind? If you were, you would not be guilty, but since you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.” Ask the Lord to remove the guilt of the sins that have on your soul.  Lent is a special time of year to forgive others, to ask for forgiveness and to be forgiven; to be washed and cleansed in the Mercy of God in the sacrament of reconciliation.

In Christ, Fr. Frank

Reflexion Espiritual
