Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, was a simple Italian woman who was responsible for founding 67 different institutions in the U.S., including schools, hospitals and orphanages. Born July 15, 1850, in a small village just outside of Milan, Italy, Cabrini was the youngest of 13 children, born two months premature, and would live her life in fragile health. In 1880, Cabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She arrived to New York City in 1889 and made her way to Colorado in 1902, ministering to poor Italian mining workers and their families in the foothills west of Denver. Mother Cabrini died on Dec. 22, 1917, in Chicago and was canonized on July 7, 1946 by Pope Pius XII. Her feast day is celebrated on November 13.
